Outpatient (IOP) or PHP Treatment for Sex-Porn Addictions

 

Those in need of treatment for sex and pornography addiction, as well as substance abuse issues, have several outpatient rehab options available.


 

The term “Intensive Outpatient Rehab” (IOP) is basically a household term these days, in part because it refers not only to addiction treatment but also to various levels and types of physical rehabilitation, such as, following a stroke, following reconstructive knee surgery and so forth. For men suffering from porn or sex addictions, the non-residential rehab options, for the most
part, break down into the following 3 categories:.

  • PHP – Partial Hospitalization
  • IOP – Intensive Outpatient Rehab
  • OP – Outpatient Rehab

 

It is important to note that these categories are not exclusive to sex and porn addiction treatment centers. The same categories of services are offered in drug and alcohol treatment centers as well.

 

If you have read through this website you likely have encountered the few portions where we describe a key difference between the recovery for sex & porn addicts and that of drug & alcohol addiction. For those who have not, here is a snapshot of the overall point:

So, how can outpatient treatment be beneficial for one person, while a detriment to another? Many addicts; sex addicts, porn addicts, drug addicts, gambling addicts, etc., can find the various freedoms inherent to outpatient rehab to be tricky. For the sex and porn addict,
however, managing that inherent freedom, those blocks of time in between sessions of total freedom and minimal accountability, is a necessary process since the goal is to get back to revert to a state of healthy, honest and intimate sexual relations. Whereas for the drug addict, as we have personally seen time and again, it can become the dangling carrot.

Being the highest level of structure, PHP treatment is a common starting point at day-one of sobriety. With a minimum of 25 1⁄2 clinical hours required per week, PHP provides the highest level of structure for those choosing or needing to remain living at their current residence. The next two transition points are IOP at a required 9 clinical hours per week, and lastly OP at 4 hours per week.

So where is the disconnect? Why is it that over the years we have seen such small percentages of outpatient treatment center clients stay with the program, complete the program and ultimately remain on course with their recovery? As I sit here writing, I am wholeheartedly
trying to tap into my countless memories, experiences & stories of clients having genuinely attempted to follow the outpatient program but could never turn that proverbial corner. I cannot recall so much as one outpatient rehab experience that panned out…

Do you know what is missing? There is one thing in the treatment process that must occur. Without it failure is a guarantee…maybe not today and maybe not tomorrow, but at some point failure is a certainty. And unfortunately, history has shown that sitting through 25 1⁄2 or 9 or 3 hours of process groups and therapy per week doesn’t usually evoke this one absolute necessity.

The key is “Change.”

I can “comply” my way through 4 or 5 months of recovery before I trip. I can “acquiesce” my way through 5 or 6 months of recovery until I stumble. But if I change, if I truly change, I become boundless.
